The 4th International Workshop on Advances on Privacy Preserving Technologies and Solutions (IWAPS) was co-organized by the FAME project, along with several other EU-funded research projects, including NITRO (DIGITAL, GA no: 101145872), RESCALE (HORIZON, GA no: 101120962), ERATOSTHENES (H2020, GA no: 101020416), CYBERUNITY (DIGITAL, GA no: 101128024), CHRISS (HORIZON, GA no: 101082440), ENTRUST (HORIZON, GA no: 101095634), aerOS (HORIZON, GA no: 101069732), COBALT (HORIZON, GA no: 101119602), CyberSuite (DIGITAL, GA no: 101145861), AIAS (HORIZON, GA no: 101131292), OASSES (HORIZON, GA no: 101092702), ODEON (HORIZON, GA no: 101136128), SAFE-6G (HORIZON, GA no: 101139031), SOVEREIGN (HORIZON, GA no: 101131481), and TRUSTEE (HORIZON, GA no: 101070214), in conjunction with the 19th International Conference on Availability, Reliability, and Security (ARES).
During the workshop, discussions and presentations were held on the availability of massive amounts of data, which, coupled with high-performance cloud computing platforms, had driven significant progress in machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and optimization applications. However, it was noted that this progress had exponentially expanded the threat landscape for cyber-attacks, escalating the cyber risks for involved industries and impacting areas such as computer vision, natural language processing, transportation, trust computing, identity management, and psychological manipulation.
The workshop focused on efforts to strengthen security and privacy through research and activities aimed at designing secure, privacy-preserving, and trustworthy architectures. Investments in cyber-defense, data analysis, fusion platforms, protocols, algorithms, services, and applications for next-generation systems were highlighted. Innovative ML techniques for addressing challenges such as large data volume inspection and cyberattacks were especially encouraged. Theoretical and practical challenges related to IoT platforms, particularly the design of privacy-preserving AI systems and algorithms, were also explored.
In addition, discussions touched on the multidisciplinary nature of privacy-preserving AI systems, including contributions related to policy, legal issues, and the societal impact of privacy, which influence the cyber risks faced by participating entities.
The 2024 IWAPS successfully brought together researchers, engineers, and practitioners to present and discuss the latest advancements and innovations in theories, infrastructures, schemes, and applications related to secure computation, privacy technologies, security economics, and human-computer interaction. Emerging research topics were identified, and future trends were defined as part of the workshop’s objective
More Information about FAME:
FAME is currently in development as a collaborative effort among leading experts in data management, data technologies, the data economy, and digital finance. The project is focused on creating a unique, open, and secure federated data marketplace for EmFi. This marketplace aims to address the shortcomings of centralized cloud marketplaces and fully realize the potential of the data economy by enabling decentralized and programmable pricing and trading of data assets.
At present, FAME is enhancing the existing H2020 i3-MARKET infrastructure with several innovative features. The project is working on enabling secure, interoperable, and regulatory-compliant data exchange across multiple federated cloud-based data providers, in alignment with emerging European cloud initiatives like GAIA-X. Additionally, it is integrating blockchain tokenization techniques to facilitate decentralized and programmable trading and pricing of data assets, with capabilities for accruing value in NFTs.
Furthermore, FAME is incorporating advanced analytics technologies. The development team is integrating trusted and energy-efficient analytics methods, including Quantitative Explainable AI (XAI), Situation Aware Explainability (SAX), incremental energy-efficient analytics, and power-efficient edge analytics. These enhancements aim to provide a robust and forward-thinking data marketplace infrastructure.
Moving forward, InQbit will play a pivotal role in FAME’s WP3 tasks. With its expertise in the Self-sovereign identity (SSI) model, the company will offer its services during the creation of the AAI infrastructure.
